MCDONOUGH,Ga. - The Newton Lady Rams played top-notch defense on the road against the McDonough Lady Warhawks and walked away with a commanding 46-24 victory.
The Lady Rams were stifling in the first-half as they held their opponents to just five points at the halftime break. The Lady Rams' efforts in the second quarter highlighted their excellent defensive play as they did not give up a single point to the Warhawks during that period of play.
The outstanding defense by the Lady Rams led to only three Lady Warhawks registering points, and one member of the Lady Warhawks that scored only had one point in the game.
With this shutdown defense, the Lady Rams led the majority of the game and confidently headed to the locker room during the halftime period with a 19-5 lead. They would end up leading each quarter in scoring and finishing up the game with
The offense of the Lady Rams was not as overwhelming as their defense, but multiple scorers were involved and played a role in the team's 22-point victory.
While the Lady Warhawks only had three scorers register the point, the Lady Rams had eight different scorers on the night, including two players reaching double digits.
Those two players were Ashanti Wright, who finished as the team's leading scorer with 12 points, and Tijunna Freeman, who finished with 10 points.
Lady Rams head coach Tiffani Johnson has always commented on the great depth of her team, and it seems that it was in full effect in this most recent victory.
Johnson will hope that the great defense and wide-range of scorers will continue for her team for the remaining games of the season.
The Lady Rams will battle for the bragging rights of being the best girls team in the county as they will take on their county opponents, the Alcovy Tigers and Eastside Eagles, on back-to-back days in their next games.
The Lady Rams will first take on the Lady Tigers of Alcovy on Friday, Dec. 20. They will follow up that game with one against the Lady Eagles of Eastside on Saturday, Dec. 21.
The Lady Rams will host both games and try to emerge with their fourth and fifth-straight victories.
