Newton went deep into its bench and got some valuable playing time for its reserves against Druid Hills Tuesday night, as the Rams routed the Red Devils 77-40 at home.

It was a well-rounded scoring effort for Newton, as Darvin Jones scored 12 points to pace the Rams. D.J. Hill finished with eight points, and Jalen Glover added 10 to join Jones in double figures.

In all, 12 different Newton players scored in the 37-point win, as Newton shot 45 percent from the field.

“I thought our guard play was too much for them in the first quarter,” Newton coach Rick Rasmussen said. “We did a great job of getting into the passing lanes.”

Newton started off the game on one of its biggest runs of the season, a 30-5 run in the first half.

Taylor Hawkins scored eight points in the opening quarter, as Newton raced out to a 21-5 lead over the opening eight minutes of play.

The second quarter saw the Rams’ reserves begin to make their mark, helping Newton to a 13-3 run to open the period.

Newton finished the first half shooting 50 percent from the field, carrying a 42-13 lead into halftime.

The Rams didn’t let up in the second half, pushing their lead to as many as 45 points. Newton got solid play out of its big men, Tra Peaks and Josh Tukes, in the second half.

Newton has a chance to claim the second spot in Region 2-AAAAAA Friday night when its takes on Lovejoy.

The Rams fell 56-48 to the Wildcats earlier this season.

“We are going to have to play smart,” Rasmussen. “We have a chance, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at home.
