After catching a pair of touchdown passes to lead Newton High to a 32-21 victory over Druid Hills last Friday, the Rams' Davonta Jones was named Newton's Athlete of the Week.
Jones caught scoring passes of 30 yards and 13 yards in the victory.
The win moved the Rams to 2-0 in the region to stay atop the region standings with Lovejoy.
Jones said that coaching has made a big difference in his improvement on the field this season.
"I just listened to coach and caught the ball," Jones said. "We worked on catching the ball a lot in practice leading up to the game."
Jones also had another big touchdown grab earlier in the season, catching the game-winning pass in the Rams' 15-14 upset victory over Lowndes.
Jones, who has been playing football since the sixth grade, said the Rams still have a lot to prove.
"We're proud of what we have done in the region, but we look at every week like we are starting 0-0," he said. "We still have a lot to prove and we have to keep winning and showing people what we can do."
Newton returns to action tonight against Rockdale.
