The Newton Rams and Alcovy Tigers varsity cross-country programs competed in the Region 2-AAAAAA championship meet at Druid Hills Middle School this past Saturday.
The Rams finished fifth overall in the men's race and second overall in the women's race.
The Tigers did not have enough participants to qualify in the team meets.
Kameron Wallace finished ninth overall in the men's meet in a time of 17:59.90 to lead the Rams. Newton finished with three top-20 runners in the men's race, with Randolph Narratt (19:02.07) and Cameron Clark (19:11.27) placing 17th and 20th, respectively.
Nakai James (19:53.33), Richard Nelson (20:29.04), Josh Suber (20:59.21) and Malik Franklin (21:22.94) rounded out the Rams' runners in the men's race. James placed inside the top 25 with a 24th place finish, while Nelson, Suber and Franklin placed 33rd, 35th and 36th overall.
The Rams finished with 99 total points, just six points behind Luella for fourth place.
Harold Monte led the Tigers' with a 16th place finish in a time of 19:01.10. Monte was the lone Alcovy runner to finish inside the top 25.
Jeremy Branch (21:56.87), Demario Loyal (22:29.64) and Deandre German (24:36.14) finished 27th, 28th and 43rd for Alcovy, respectively.
Rockdale County placed first overall in the men's race with 31 total points. Druid Hills (46) and Morrow High (74) rounded out the top three.
Lovejoy rounded out the men's competition with 168 points in fifth place.
The Lady Rams fared better in the women's compeition, placing second overall with 61 points behind Druid Hills.
Newton leads
The Lady Rams placed seven runners in the top 25, with Maiya Newton leading the Lady Rams with a ninth-place finish. Newton finished in a time of 23:33.36.
Riara Santos (24:37.99) and Brianna Hayden (24:55.74) placed inside the top-15 for Newton, with Santos finishing 12th and Hayden placing 15th.
Genevie Antoine (25:29.36), Desire' Griffin (25:35.96), Kourtnii Farley (27:41.94) and Ashley Jean-Baptiste (27:47.28) placed 18th, 20th, 24th and 25th for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Tigers had just two participants in the women's race. Brianna Archer finished 17th for the Tigers in a time of 25:17.13 and Miyanna Goodson placed 22nd in a time of 26:28.41 for Alcovy.
The Luella Lions (67) and Rockdale County Bulldogs (79) finished third and fourth in the women's team compeition.
The Georgia High School Association will host its annual state championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Carrollton High School.
Four teams from each region in classes 2A to 6A will qualify for the state meet, along with the six top finishers from each region meet if their teams do not qualify for the state meet based on their region finish.
Teams may bring a minimum of five runners to the state meet, with a maximum of seven entrants allowed for each school.
The state meet will begin at 7:45 a.m.
