The Newton girls’ soccer team may have missed out on the playoffs, but the Lady Rams left 2013 on a bright note winning three of their last seven.
The third win was Newton’s last, topping Morrow 3-0 Wednesday, its second in Region 2-AAAAAAA.
The game was very physical early and often. So physical that Morrow was called for a foul inside its own penalty box, leading to a penalty to kick for Newton. Lacey Brackett drilled the penalty kick, giving Newton its first goal 10 minutes into the game.
Newton would keep the lead at halftime and added on in the second half. Angie Dang scored Newton’s second goal on a great assist from her teammate, 11 minutes into the second half. Sophomore Precious Buddington sealed it with the third goal late.
Newton played solid defense, with some great saves by goalkeeper Jordan Daniel.
It was Senior Night for Newton and their senior players went out with a bang. After starting the season with nine straight loses, Newton went on to finish with a 3-13 ledger, leaving the Lady Rams bright about the future.
“Next year I’m looking forward to have our players improve and get even better and have a winning season next year” said Abigail Bugg.
The Lady Rams won two games in 2012, moving up by a game’s improvement.
“It’s nice to be last,” Newton coach David Alexander said. “It’s nice to improve. We showed steady improvement throughout the year, and I attribute that to the good leaders we have on our team.”
Newton is returning three key players that can help them be successful next season. Junior Lacey Brackett, and two sophomores Precious Buddington and Abigail Bugg, they all helped the team extremely this year. Buddington and Bugg were both captains as underclassmen.
“We are looking for them to lead us next year, and hopefully we’ll be able to produce some better results next year” said Alexander.
