Eagles slip past Locust Grove 50-48
Eastside holds off late rally, wins on last-second layup

Eastside slipped held off a fourth-quarter rally to slip past Locust Grove 50-48 in overtime Tuesday to earn the season sweep and improve to 5-3 in Region 4-AAA play.

Michael Chapman’s layup at the buzzer was the only basket in the four minute overtime. It was also Chapman’s only two points of the game.

Chavios Williams led the way for the Eagles with 12 points. Anthony Henderson and Treyvon Francis each scored nine while Quindarious Russell had eight. Williams also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double.

Leading scorer Ben Miller had a tough night offensively, scoring six points on a game-high 11 field goal attempts, But he made up for his cold shooting with a game-high six assists.

The Eagles shot 44 percent from the field but were only 2-for-7 from beyond the arc. They also struggled at the free throw line, hitting 8 of 15 from the stripe.

Eastside led early and never trailed in the game. They had a double-digit lead in the second half before the Wildcats went on a 17-9 run to close the gap. 

Eastside is away again tonight for a region matchup against Jackson. The Eagles return home next Friday to host Eagles Landing.

Despite a 7-9 overall record, the Eagles are currently in the fourth position in the region standings. Eagles Landing leads the way with a perfect 8-0 region record. They’re 15-1 overall.

If Eastside is going to continue its playoff push, consistency is going to be a factor. The Eagles have yet to string together more than two wins in a row and have had a three and a four-game losing streak. 

Two of Eastside’s next three opponents won’t  be any time to relax either. The Eagles host Eagles Landing in a week, then turn around to face county nemesis Newton. The Rams won the first matchup by 31 points.
