A cheery Challenge

The weather took a turn to the cold early Saturday morning, but that didn’t stop the Covington Y from having another successful Cheerios Challenge.

The 12th annual racing event, which originally started as the YMCA National Healthy Kids Day, began at 7:30 a.m. Saturday after a moment of silence in honor of Boston and the Boston Marathon bombing victims.

The 10K was the first of three races taking place from the starting point of the Covington Y, followed by the 1-mile fun run and a 5K.

Eric John was the overall winner in the 10K in a time of 38 minutes, 22 seconds, and Kelly Brown was the female winner in 45:03.

“It feels good to win the hometown race,” John said.

Jody Glidewell won the 5K in a time of 18:12, followed by Katie Smith in 21:25, as the female winner.

“It feels good,” said seven-time Cheerios Challenge participant Glidwell. “It’s a little colder than I expected but I just started out fast.”

Bradley Blake, age 16, was the mile winner for the boys and Caleigh Heyweed, age 11, was the girls winner. The proceeds for the event will go toward children and families who want to participate in YMCA events.
