COVINGTON, Ga. — Make it 10 straight for the Eastside Eagles baseball team.
The Eagles blanked Region 4-AAAA Druid Hills 6-0 Friday night, improving their record to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in region play, while also collecting their fifth shutout of the season.
Junior pitcher Jackson Feeney had turned another solid pitching performance, tossing five innings of three-hit ball with three strikeouts. Sophomore Cade Mitchell also fanned three in one inning as the Eagles continue to sit alone atop the region standings, still one game ahead of Woodward Academy and Hampton — teams Eastside will face on April 12 and April 16 respectively.
Feeney ran his record up to 3-1 for the season while holding a 2.23 ERA in 10 appearances. With 29 strikeouts in 31.1 innings of work, he’s been the workhorse on the mound for a deep Eastside bullpen that’s seen 10 pitchers make an appearance on the hill this season.
It’s indicative of the sheer dominance Eastside pitching has displayed this season. Overall, the team’s total ERA sits at 1.24 and Eastside pitchers have allowed just 53 hits in 96 innings while fanning a total of 128 batters.
Feeney and Mitchell have carried the brunt of the load. Mitchell leads the team with 37 strikeouts and a 0.70 ERA in just 20 innings of work, but hurlers like junior Parker Daniel and Brayden Downs and senior Lawson Beshears have also proven themselves more than capable.
The Eagles got what it needed from its bats also as Aron Cox, Dawson Schwartz, John Robert McGowan and Sambo Button all recorded RBIs. McGowan’s came on a RBI double as Eastside jumped out to a fast 4-0 start in the first inning and never looked back, adding a run a piece in the second and fifth frames.
Eastside will take on Jackson (10-6, 5-4 in Region 6-AAAAA) Wednesday in the Diamond Devil Dust Up Tournament with first pitch slated for 11 a.m. at Norcross High School.
