Lady Eagles falter in loss to Walnut Grove

After winning three straight, the Lady Eagles (5-12, 1-5 Region 4-AAAA) have now lost two straight region games with the latest a 63-45 loss to Walnut Grove at home.

Destine Smith tied game with Eastside’s first score coming off an inbounds play that got her a wide open jumper. Walnut Grove answered Smith’s jumper with a three-pointer.

The Lady Warriors would take a 9-2 lead, forcing an Eastside timeout at the 4:59 mark of the opening period. The Lady Eagles immediately turned the ball over and Hope Yancey swished another three to give Walnut Grove a 12-2 lead.

Smith ran off with a steal and score to make it 16-9 in the final minute of the first quarter, Lady Warriors but Walnut Grove converted an and-one on the other end and took a 19-9 lead into the second quarter.

The Lady Warriors would take a 24-11 coming out of the first, but back-to-back baskets from Eastside got the lead down to nine.

Another steal and score from Smith got the lead down to seven with three minutes remaining in the half.

Trap defense from Eastside kept them in the game as they doubled Walnut Grove players coming off defensive rebounds and Lady Eagle baskets. On the other end, Eastside got out in transition and pushed it on offense to score. Most of their points came off Walnut Grove turnovers.

Two end-of-half free throws gave the Lady Warriors a 32-20 lead at halftime. Usual Lady Eagles leading scorer Teirra Brown and Smith combined for 12 of Eastside’s 20 first-half points.

The Lady Eagles were held scoreless in the opening minutes of the second half until Chasity Smith converted a putback to make it 36-22, Walnut Grove. A 9-0 run from the Lady Warriors put them up 45-22, and the Lady Eagles continued to struggle on offense in the second half.

Eastside was able to finish the third on a 10-4 run but trailed 49-32 entering the final frame and couldn’t overcome the 17-point deficit.
