Eastside alum shines at Garner-Webb
Ellwanger named CCSA swimmer of the week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Gardner-Webb’s Drew Ellwanger, a former standout swimmer at Eastside,  was named the CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week for meets competed Jan. 2-8, the League announced Friday.

Ellwanger led Gardner-Webb with three gold medals in the 202-74 win over Darton College on Jan. 8.  The junior swam the breaststroke leg of Gardner-Webb’s first-place 400-yard medley relay that finished in 3:30.22, then followed with a win in the 50 breast, touching in at 26.61.  He then garnered his third first-place finish of the day, the 150 breast, clocking in at 1:32.46.  With last week’s performance, Ellwanger adds to what has been an impressive season thus far, which includes the CCSA’s top-time in the 100-yard breaststroke to date (56.40).

Ellwanger and the rest of the Runnin’ Bulldog men will be back in action Jan. 19 at Limestone College. The Gardner-Webb women will next compete at Davidson Jan. 21.

Ellwanger is an active participant in the mentoring of local swimmers through the Covington YMCA. During the summer he helps coach the Covington YMCA Piranha's, a burgeoning youth swim team comprised of local swimmers.
