With the Eagles trailing Elbert County 22-21 last Friday, Eastside coach Rick Hurst called on his senior running back to bail him out. He responded.

Broderick Alexander took a handoff over the left side and rumbled 53 yards for a touchdown to recapture the lead and restore order.

After the defense held the Blue Devils on four downs, B.A. as he’s called responded once again with a 10-yard run to seal the game and earn The Covington News/Johnny’s Pizza Prep Athlete of the Week.

For the game, Alexander had 137 yards on 13 carries while picking up 13 yards on one reception.

"That run by B.A. was huge for us," Hurst said after Friday’s win. "That just goes to show you what kind of player he is."

Alexander is a four year varsity running back who spent his first two years at Newton. Since he has been in Hurst system, he’s flourished. He currently leads his team in rushing with 276 as well as in touchdown with five. Considering Eastside usually spreads the ball between four running backs and Quarterback Justin Wray, Alexander’s are that much more impressive.

For the second consecutive year, the Eagles have started 4-0. Alexander said he feels good about where his team is but knows they still have work to do, especially as they head into the next two region games against Stephens County and Hart County.

"We had an easy practice yesterday but we will get ready as the week goes on," he said. "We’ll keep working hard because we aren’t where we need to be yet."

Alexander hopes to play football in college and says he has had some looks from several schools. Some of them are looking at him to be a linebacker but he prefers the offensive side of the ball. One thing is for sure, he has the size and speed to knock guys around regardless of position and he said he just wants to play.

"I have really concentrated on my running this year," he said. "I haven’t played too much defense but I may as the season goes on and my conditioning improves."

Alexander said the goal is to win a state championship. Regardless of where or how much he plays, the senior running back wants to do whatever it takes to win.

"I’ll do whatever the coaches ask me to do," He said. "We are all a close group and I feel like that’s what has helped us so far. We all want to win a championship.
