COVINGTON, Ga. — Alcovy’s Jamel Johnson signed his national letter of intent to continue his athletic and academic career at Charleston Southern University.

Johnson, alongside seven of his teammates, made it all official at a national signing day ceremony on Feb. 2.

“It felt great signing next to my brothers knowing all the hard work that was put to be on that stage. It took a lot of pressure off of me,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s decision to sign with the Buccaneers is coming off a senior season where he played a big role for the Tigers on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and defensive back.

Following the season, Johnson was awarded the Region 3-AAAAAA Athlete of The Year as well as earning All-State honors.

“[Jamel] is quiet, but when he steps on that field, he is dangerous,” defensive back coach TC Robinson said. “Before the season started, I talked to Jamel and told him that he needed to be the captain of the secondary, and that he would need to step up and play both sides. He took that in, he stayed humble, he kept his head down and he continued to grind.”

Johnson came through for the Tigers when they needed him the most during his final season.

In the championship for Region 3-AAAAAA against Evans on Nov. 6, 2021, Johnson came away with an interception as well as the touchdown catch that sealed the first region title in Alcovy football history.

Johnson’s success all culminated in him joining Charleston Southern in the fall.

Johnson highlighted that Charleston Southern was a good spot for him because he liked the engineering program as well as how close the university is to his hometown.

“Charleston Southern University is going to be receiving a hard-working young man on and off the field,” Johnson said.
