Both Alcovy basketball teams capped a perfect week in region play with home wins over Woodland, Henry Friday. The girls struggled a bit offensively but managed to come away with a 55-50 win before the boys escaped with a 54-48 win.

Alcovy started the week with a pair of blowouts against Ola Tuesday. The girls cruised to a 60-42 win while the boys ran all over the Mustangs in a 79-56 rout.

With the two wins, both the boys’ and girls’ teams have identical 9-0 records in Region 3A-AAAA play. The girls are 19-2 overall while the boys are 18-3 overall. The girls have a two-game lead in the standings while the boys are up two and a half games clear of second place Dutchtown but are three games better in the loss column.  Fayette County boys are undefeated in Region 3B-AAAA on the other side of the region.

National signing day is Wednesday

Several athletes from the county’s three high schools are expected to sign collegiate letters of intent on national signing day. Alcovy’s all-everything running back/defensive back committed to Duke University and will sign to play defensive back while Eastside’s defensive lineman tandem Sheldon Rankins and Shaquille Huff are expected to sign at Louisville and Middle Tennessee State University respectively.

Eastside’s Dante Blackmon, who originally committed to play at Indiana University, will sign at Appalachian State University where he will join former Newton star Demetrius McCray at defensive back. McCray was recently named First Team All-Southern Conference on defense.

High school athletes are able to commit to colleges at any time during the school year but can’t sign until Feb. 1 of each year.

Eastside linebacker Blake Rouse is reportedly being recruited by Georgia Southern University and could sign Wednesday as well. If Rouse ends up at Georgia Southern, he would become teammates with another former Ram star Justice Ejike.
