Alcovy gets dominated at home
1025-ALCOVY-FB

The Alcovy Tigers (1-7, 1-2 region, 2-AAAAAA) hosted a conference game against the Tucker Tigers in what turned out to be a rout, full of big plays. Tucker defeated the Alcovy Tigers 58-0 in what was a mismatch of talent.

The Alcovy Tigers kicked off to the Tucker Tigers and Tucker got a good return up to the 49-yard line to start the game. On the first play from scrimmage, Tucker went deep as Alcovy blew the coverage on the play, and the Tigers had a receiver wide open for an easy 51-yard touchdown.

Alcovy started their drive at their own 15-yard line, and the very first play was a penalty on the Tucker Tigers. Senior James Bell got the first two carries which resulted in a two yard loss followed by a two yard gain. After an incomplete pass, Alcovy punted.

The punt was only 18 yards, and it gave Tucker great field position to start their second drive. From the 16-yard line, Tucker senior Kymani Campbell rushed up the middle and cut left for a Tucker touchdown. After the extra point, it was 14-0 with 9:32 left in the first quarter.

Alcovy’s second drive started from their 48-yard line after a 39-yard kickoff return. They started slow again with a false start penalty, followed by a rush for no gain and a two-yard sack before punting. Tucker started at their own 38-yard line on their third drive.

On the first play, they got a 52-yard run from Campbell to set them up at the Alcovy 10-yard line. Two plays later, Campbell ran up the middle for a three-yard touchdown, and the score with 5:36 left in the first was 21-0.

Alcovy received the ball in their end zone and returned it to the 16-yard line to start their drive. Sophomore Quindrelin Hammonds had a rough night through the air. His first pass on the third drive was intended to be a screen play, but it was picked off and returned for a touchdown. With 5:22 left in the first quarter, the score was 28-0 Tucker.

Alcovy started the next drive on their own 20-yard line, and once again, it was a false start. A seven-yard run from Hammonds was followed by another three-yard run, but a sack forced the Tigers to punt.

The fourth drive of the first quarter for the Tucker Tigers started at the 44-yard line with a penalty, but ended with a 56-yard touchdown to make it 35-0 on the last play of the first quarter. To start the second quarter, Alcovy could only get the ball out to the 12-yard line to start the drive. After only four yards on two rushes, Hammonds threw an interception and Tucker was in business again at Alcovy’s 11-yard line. Tucker’s Samuel Bryant scored and gave Tucker a commanding 42-0 lead.

The only flaws Tucker seemed to have Friday night were the penalties. Two penalties kept Alcovy’s next drive alive, but the defense held once again forcing a punt. After another bad punt and return, Tucker started at Alcovy 25.

With 4:44 left in the half, they made it 49-0 with a 19-yard touchdown pass. Alcovy’s struggles stood out as their longest play from scrimmage was a 16-yard run from sophomore Jaylon Lackey. They ended the drive near the 30 yard line and fumbled the punt attempt which was picked up and ran back for a Tucker touchdown with just 20 seconds left in the half.

With a 56-0 lead at the half, the mercy rule was invoked so the clock didn’t stop in the entire second half. Alcovy’s fortune was the same as the first half, and Tucker ran down the clock. Tucker got a safety for a six-yard loss on an Alcovy rushing attempt in the beginning of the fourth. Other than the safety, there were no points scored the rest of the game. The game ended with a score of 58-0, Tucker.

Alcovy will travel to play Rockdale County on Friday where a win would clinch a playoff spot for the Tigers and a loss greatly worsens their chances.
