Young selected as continuing education director at GPTC (Dec. 29, 2013)
Katrina McCollum Young announced she will run for her third term to the school board after confirming last week that she is withdrawing her bid for Post 2 County Commissioner.
"After careful consideration with my family, I have decided that my passion and skills are more needed for the continued success of our schools and that I can be more impactful as a board member of the Rockdale County Public Schools' Board of Education. I am committed to the success of Rockdale County and know that the community's continued economic success is extrinsically linked to a strong public school system," said Young in a released statement.
Young was recently chosen as the new Continuing Education in the Economic Development division at Georgia Perimeter Technical College. Due to those new responsibilities, she said last week was dropping her bid for commissioner.
Young said in a press release that she was "not stepping away from the reasons why (I) considered running for the BOC Post 2 seat" but believed that her talent and time would be of better use continuing her work as a Post 2 member for Rockdale County Public Schools' Board of Education.
"I am not going away and with the community's continued support, I look forward to being re-elected as Board of Education Post 2 representative," said Young.
Young was first elected to school board in 2006 and has served as the Post 2 school board member, a non-partisan seat, since 2007.
Young, a fourth generation Rockdale native, is the Fourth District Director for the Georgia School Boards Association in her work with the school board.
Previously she was a human resources administrator at General Mills. She is a member of Springfield Baptist Church. Young, a Rockdale County High School graduate, and her husband Simeon have raised their two children in Rockdale County. Both graduated from Heritage High School.
