(May 22, 2: 14 p.m.) Conyers police are on the lookout for a suspect who led a police chase up Ga. Highway 138, causing at least one accident, before abandoning his vehicle on Old Covington Road and fleeing on foot into a wooded neighborhood between Gees Mill and Old Covington.

Around 1 p.m., officers received a call about a suspect shoplifting at TJ Maxx on Ga. Highway 138. The suspect had fled in a vehicle by the time officers arrived, but a vehicle with a similar description was spotted around Bank of America on Ga. Highway 138.

When the officer attempted to pull over the vehicle, the driver kept driving.

According to CPD Capt. Mike Waters, the suspect began weaving dangerously in and out of traffic in an attempt to evade officers.

The suspect's vehicle, a red Pontiac, even clipped another car on the road while he was weaving in and out, causing a crash near Old Salem Road and 138.

"Once he hit another car, it escalated things," said Police Chief Gene Wilson.

Wilson happened to be on Old Salem Road and saw the suspect coming the opposite way. The Chief turned on his blue lights.

The suspect's vehicle then drove towards Wilson and appeared to attempt to ram his car.

At the last minute, the suspect swerved, going into the ditch of the opposite side before coming back on the road.

The chase continued and eventually the suspect ended up on Old Covington Road near Buchannan Circle, where he abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.

A search perimeter was set up around the area between Old Covington Road and Gees Mill with K9 units for about an hour.

The suspect is described as a black male, thin, approximately 5'2", black shirt, jeans, short hair, 20-30 years old, last seen wearing black Polo shirt, light denim pants, high top shoes.

Anyone with information on the suspect or incident is asked to call Conyers Police at (770) 483-6600.

There was reportedly no serious injury from the other crash.
