With recent discussion and questions about the upgrade of the county’s 911 radio to a digital system, South Rockdale Civic Association decided to tackle the topic by hosting a forum featuring industry experts and representatives on Nov. 15.
The forum will be held at Union United Methodist Church, 4600 Ga. Highway 138 South, on the corner of Highway 138 and Union Church Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m.
SRCA President Don Meyer said even though the forum was focused on the issue of digital P25 infrastructure nationally, he hoped local officials and residents would gain from the discussion.
“If we don’t get this thing right, there could be a lot of problems. It’s our first and only chance going on. I’m excited about having a hand in putting this straight once and for all,” Meyer said.
Representatives from Motorola, Harris, Tait, EF Johnson, Cassibian, Tusa, Kenwood have been invited to participate on a panel, and representatives from the state and Georgia Tech.
“They will not be talking about their product,” said Meyer. “They’re going to talk about the needs of the attendees.”
Rockdale had recently canceled a request for proposals due to a procedural error for a $4.5 million Special Local Purpose Option Sales Tax funded upgrade of the 911 radio system.
“It’s one of the greatest programs South Rockdale’s done in its history, except stopping the quarry,” Meyer said.
