Snow for Christmas?

The National Weather Service today issued a special weather statement that calls for 1-3 inches of snow in the Atlanta area and in Athens, and 1 inch or less of snow south of Atlanta.

Forecasters are calling for 2-4 inches of snow in the Georgia highlands, with frozen precipitation beginning Christmas Eve in the mountains and spreading south on Christmas Day. Rain is expected to switch to snow Saturday evening.

The forecast for Covington is rain before 1 p.m., with a high of 38 on Christmas Day, then rain and snow. Chance of rain is 70 percent. For Christmas night, forecasters are calling for snow, and a low of 28. The chance of precipitation for Saturday night is 50 percent.

If you are traveling Friday, expect a high of 53 and a low of 33.
