Things will be heating up in a good way at Rockdale Career Academy on Saturday, March 28 as two professional-level barbecue, steak and hamburger competitions take place with cash purses totaling $10,000. And what better to go with grilled meat than a cool classic car show at the same time.

On Friday and Saturday, RCA plays host to the Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned barbecue contest, held by Royal Oak BBQ. This competition features more than 30 teams from all over the southeast going head to head for the title - and a chance at $10,000 of prize money. Teams began arriving this week to set up on Friday and will cook through the night. At least one of those teams is made of RCA culinary arts students - the "Six Butts BBQ" team under the guidance of Big Jim Stancil. Teams must turn in their mouthwatering creations by 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28, with the awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

At the very same time, the Steak Cookoff Association is hosting their inaugural competition for the best Steak and Burger in metro Atlanta on Saturday, March 28. The competing teams range from amateur backyard grillers to reigning National Steak Cookoff and World Steak Cookoff Champions as they go head to head for their share of a $2,500 purse. Turn-in times for the steak and burger competition is 2 p.m. for steak and 2:30 p.m. for burgers. The awards ceremony is at 4:30 p.m.

And Summit Racing Equipment holds the Smokin Tires car show on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., featuring more than 200 cars, trucks, and 4x4s from around the state.

Items to be raffled through the day include a Primo XL Ceramic Grill worth $1,800; tickets to enter the raffle are $20. There will also be live music and plates of barbecue sold by Jim 'N Nick's.

Proceeds from the event go to help the NewRock Family Promise interdenominational hospitality network for homeless families.
