The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is looking for two escaped inmates who walked away from their work detail on Saturday.
The inmates, both jailed for nonviolent offenses such as driving without a license and burglary, were working in the kitchen when they walked away into the wooded area behind the Rockdale County jail. Their jumpsuits were located in the woods a short time later.
A search perimeter was set up, with help from a Georgia State Patrol helicopter.
K9 units from the RCSO and Newton County Sheriff's Office tracked the inmates through the woods to Lake Rockaway Road, where the scent was lost.
According to a statement released on Saturday, it is believed the inmates had outside help and were picked up in a vehicle in the Lake Rockaway Road area.
Jose Alfredo Mendez, 18, was originally charged in October 2011 with driving without a valid license, driving with no seat belt and burglary. He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 175 pounds.
Cesar Villegas, 24, was originally charged in December 2011 with driving without a valid license. He is described as about 5 feet 4 inches tall and about 160 pounds.
They now both face a charge of escape and other possible charges.
Investigators are asking for the public's help with any information on the whereabouts of these two escaped inmates. Anyone with information is asked to call 770-278-8000.
