Mr. Samuel Hicks Smith, age 79 of Conyers, Georgia passed away Thursday, August 19. 2010.  He was born September 14, 1930.He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bamie Smith and brother, Larry Smith.He is survived by his wife, Mary Agnes (Cochran) Smith of Conyers; brother, Bill and Hazel Smith of Conyers; children, Al and Robin Smith of Conyers, Phil and Becky Smith of Covington; grandchildren, Jason and Elizziebeth Smith of Loganville, Brynne and Andy Rowe of Covington, Mandy and Billy Hale of Covington, Ashley Liefels of Savannah; great-grandchildren, Christopher Smith of Loganville, Kensley Rowe of Covington, Alexis Hale, Mackenzie Hale, and Chloe Hale of Covington; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.Samuel was known by many as "Sam".  A graduate of Newton County High School and attended Georgia State University, Massey Business College and Oglethorpe University; Sam was drafted into the United States Army in 1951.  He was a Corporal during the Korean War from 1951-1953.  Once he returned from war, he became the first manager for Mid-Georgia Natural Gas from 1954-1964.  He then worked as a Controller for Allis Chalmers from 1966-1986.  After his retirement, he worked for American General for five years.Sam was loved by so many people and is remembered as a caring and fun-loving person.  He loved to hunt and fish.  He was a member of the Bass Club of Conyers for many years.  He also enjoyed playing football, baseball and golf with his sons, and is remembered for using his talented hands to create wooden toys for his grandson.Funeral services are to be held Monday, August 23rd at 11 a.m. at Conyers First UMC in Conyers with Dr. John Beyers and Rev. Dan Brokaw officiating; interment to follow at Eastview Cemetery.  Family will be receiving friends Sunday, August 22nd from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Conyers First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
