Mr. Robert Lewis Blackwood, age 88 of Conyers, died Wednesday, September 15, 2010. He was born July 19, 1922 in Chapel Hill, N.C. He had two brothers, Riddick and Truett, and four sisters, Elizabeth, Annie, Nancy and Hazel; Robert (Bob) was the last to die. His father was a farmer and died when Bob was 15 years old causing him to quit school and go to work. He was in the CCC's working on public projects for two years. He worked on various powerhouses around North and South Carolina. Later, with his brother, Riddick, he worked as a boilermaker at a shipyard in Savannah, GA until they joined the U. S. Army for World War II. Assigned and trained as a Combat Engineer, Bob fought with the 3rd Army in Europe. As a SGT MAJ he was accompanying a group of officers scouting a road, when their vehicle hit a land mine. All were killed, except for Bob, who made his way to an aid station. He recuperated from his wounds in England and went back to his unit, remaining with them until VE day. Sent back to the U. S. he was preparing for reassignment to the Pacific for the invasion of Japan, when the war ended. Mustered out he came to Atlanta, GA and got a job as a steel erector with Calvert Iron Works. Bob later worked for Burton Construction and Erskine Frasier Erectors, also joining the Iron Workers Local 387 and remained a member the rest of his life. He met his wife to be, Elizabeth (Betty) Hamilton, the daughter of his supervisor. Bob and Betty bought land in Rockdale County, GA and built a home, farming land and raising cattle. They joined Philadelphia United Methodist Church. They had two sons, Riddick and Michael, and a daughter, Mary Nell. Their son, Riddick and his wife, Karen, had two sons, Joshua and Jordan. Their son, Michael and his wife, Tammy, had two sons, Jeremy and James. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty in 2002 and daughter, Mary Nell in 1998. Bob, father, grandfather and friend, will be remembered as a loving father and a caring, diligent and hardworking man who offered a hand to anyone who would take it. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Scot Ward's Harry White Chapel with Rev. David Collins officiating; interment will follow at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends Friday, September 17, 2010 from 5 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Philadelphia United Methodist Church, 2194 West Hightower Trail, Conyers, GA 30012.
