Rockdale County students can spend the upcoming fall break learning about the Native Americans or exploring various art forms during the annual Enrichment Camp.
Rockdale County Public Schools will hold a fall Enrichment Camp at the Rockdale Career Academy during the week of fall break, Oct. 6 through Oct. 10 from 8:00 to 11:45 a.m.
RCPS invited just over 2,100 students to attend the camp, including 1,400 elementary school students in second through fifth grades and 701 middle school students. Students who had met the standards for the previous grade were eligible for Enrichment Camp.
Middle school students were offered a choice between three courses, and elementary students will take one of five courses.
During the camp, second-graders will learn about the life of a Native American by studying the food, shelter, clothing, communication, recreation, transportation, and rights/freedoms while making a culture quilt. Third-graders will study Creepy Crawlers, finding out what bugs eat and which bugs are edible.
Fourth-graders will travel back in time to research and create unique trade maps, produce goods and commodities used for bartering, and discover new modes of travel while learning about the Medieval period. Fifth-graders will be Exploring Art through Mixed Mediums, exploring the various mediums of art through hands-on experience. Additionally, in conjunction with Rockdale Career Academy and Edwards Middle School, fourth and fifth grade students have the option to take the Scrubs, Scalpels and Sports Medicine class, where they can learn all about the healthcare field through guest speakers and hands-on activities.
Middle school students may take Game Design, where they will play different games from all around the world in exciting competitions each day and then craft their own unique gaming experiences and try them out with others. World Class Traveler, where students will explore the lands of Mexico, Hawaii, Italy, and Japan; or Google Maker Camp, where students will learn how to solder, work with breadboards, manipulate code and circuitry, all while interpreting sampled data.
This year, RCPS hopes to serve more students in Rockdale County by opening up the program to homeschool and private school students who are Rockdale County residents and can provide evidence of meeting the standards in all classes last school year.
Due to the popularity of the Enrichment Camp, spaces are limited for several of the courses. However, students are welcome to continue to apply through the end of the week.
The cost for the camp is $50 per student. Payment, in the form of cash only, is accepted at the RCPS Office of Teaching and Learning at 1121 West Avenue in Conyers between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Oct. 3 and at RCA on the morning of Oct. 6.
