A pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle Friday night on Ga. Highway 81 in Newton County.

According to Georgia State Patrol spokesperson, around 9:20 p.m., a Covington police officer found the victim on the side of southbound Ga. Highway 81 near Alcovy Street in Covington.

Around 9:20 a Covington Police officer found the victim who had been hit by a vehicle in the southbound travel lanes of GA 81.

Around that time, another Covington officer located a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup in a ditch on GA 81 at Flat Shoals Road. The driver was located and identified as Caycee Lee Spears, a 23-year-old male from Covington.

The pedestrian, John Lee Brown, 46, of Covington, was transported to Newton General and was pronounced deceased at 9:59 p.m.

Charges against Spears are pending the completion of the follow-up investigation, conducted by GSP. Blood was drawn on both the driver and victim to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor.
