At their bi-annual retreat this past week, the Conyers City Council gave the green light to look at purchasing a camera system to help monitor certain high traffic sections of the city. You can read about this further in today's paper.
Although we are still dead set against putting cameras at stop lights, we do agree with council on installing these cameras. Apparently many communities throughout the country who have installed traffic light cameras - an invasive intrusion on people's dignity - are feeling the same way as they now are removing them from their roads and highways.
The council is not looking at putting the cameras in residential communities, only in commercial areas where there is major traffic and crime of all kinds.
We would caution council to go slowly on installing these cameras and be absolutely positive that their placement would deter crime, give residents a safer shopping experience, and not infringe on their privacy.
