Our Thoughts: Newspapers

"Were it left to me to decide if we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter."

"Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper."

~ Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson obviously had a love-hate relationship with newspapers based on the quotes above, a relationship that we’re sure many people share about their newspaper.

During this National Newspaper Week, we reflect on the fact The News is celebrating fourth year of service to this community.

Over the years, there have been many stories contained in The News’ pages that helped spark creation, growth and change in our community. However, we know there have also been many stories that sparked reader outrage and disgust with the paper.

The News has been at the forefront of championing some social issues, but, of course, regarding some causes, this paper’s editors and publishers have simply dropped the ball.

Through the four years, the good and bad, The News has been an invested member of the Rockdale County family and has stood shoulder to shoulder with its citizens.

Given the onslaught of information online and more rapid, individualized consumption of news, the entrenched newspaper industry has begun to change. We know we see new changes every day in the way we operate to remain relevant.

We don’t live in fear, because we believe a strong community newspaper will continue to have a place in our country for many years to come. We’ll continue to develop a strong web presence to rapidly inform you of the good and bad news in town, as well as provide your old, reliable partner, which allows for a leisurely read of the day’s most important news.

During this week, we take the time to salute our predecessors for their courage and determination in ensuring that the community has had a voice for these past four years.

We thank our current staff and carriers for their continued dedication.

We also thank our advertisers, who make it possible for us to continue to bring the most current community news to your doorstep.

And most of all, we thank you, our readers, the concerned citizens of the community who have stuck with us despite a love-hate relationship.

That relationship is no different than any that exists in a family, and we’re proud to be a part of yours.
