Rockdale deputies and state troopers are investigating an alleged shooting, armed robbery and crash that ended with one person dead and at least one in the hospital Tuesday night.
The robbery and shooting reportedly occurred around 7:45 p.m. today at 4504 Harvest Grove Lane, located at an apartment complex off of Iris Drive, according to Rockdale County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Jodi Shupe. The shooting victim was transported to Atlanta Medical Center with a bullet wound in his wrist.
A lookout description was given for the getaway vehicle of a black Nissan Maxima with multiple suspects heading towards Salem Road.
A deputy spotted a car matching that description on Flat Shoals Road and pulled up behind it.
The black Nissan then reportedly sped up, running a red light at the intersection of Flat Shoals and Salem Road, dodging several cars in the intersection before crashing into a grey Honda passenger car.
The driver of the grey Honda, 56-year-old Shirley Akin of Newton County, was taken to RMC where she died from her injuries. Shupe said an autopsy will be performed on Wednesday, as part of standard procedure when an investigation is involved.
Witnesses reportedly saw the suspects from the black Nissan get out of the car after the crash and flee the scene on foot, said Shupe.
One suspect from the Nissan, a black male, was caught after a short chase. He was reportedly uninjured from the crash and placed under arrest. Shupe said his name is being withheld for now while the investigation is ongoing. He was charged with three counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, fleeing and attempting to elude and with murder.
Deputies set up a search perimeter for the remaining suspect.
RCSO is investigating the armed robbery and shooting and Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.
