Vampires, witches and film crews will soon be wandering the streets of Olde Town Conyers as production for “The Originals,” the CW’s “Vampire Diaries” spinoff, ramps up to begin shooting soon.

“The Originals” leased the former Stericycle building in Conyers and if all goes well beyond this first season, Conyers will be the base camp for the production, said Conyers-Rockdale Camera Ready Liasion Gina Hartsell. Crews have already transformed the look of Olde Town, creating balconies and putting in new pavers, trees and lampposts in preparation for shooting that could begin as early as the end of the week, according to Hartsell, although shooting schedules are subject to change.

“They’ve hired close to 100 people. They’re putting up balconies to have a whole New Orleans look,” said Hartsell.

The balconies that were already constructed were secure enough to withstand the storm that blew through town and took off a portion of the roof of The Pointe Bar on Wednesday. However, any scenes that were planned for The Pointe may be put on hold as the bar rebuilds.

Mystic Falls Tours, which takes fans to locations where The Vampire Diaries is shot in Covington, has already expanded to Conyers.

City spokesperson Jennifer Edwards said the city is continuing to work on forming guidelines for accommodating film productions and local merchants. With the increased frequency of productions coming to Olde Town, the city wanted to have something in place to give to production companies and to minimize inconvenience or negative impact on local businesses.
