A Newton County detention officer was arrested for alleged sexual assault on an inmate, police reports said.

Habeus Tywone White, 34, was arrested following an outcry made by a female inmate to detention officers at the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) Detention Center about a male detention officer sexually assaulting her. According to an NCSO press release, the outcry was made on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Detention personnel immediately contacted the NCSO Criminal Investigation Division (CID), where a thorough investigation was conducted, the report said. Collected evidence gave probable cause to apply for an arrest warrant.

On Thursday, Sept. 18, a judge reviewed the probable cause affidavit and signed an arrest warrant for White for “sexual assault on person in custody and violation of oath of office by a public officer.”

At the time of the incident, White was an NCSO detention officer, but “immediately after his arrest he was terminated.”
The report said interviews with everyone involved indicated the incident was isolated between the one female inmate and White.
