Last week, May 11-17, was National Police Week. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that day falls as Police Week. We take this time to honor those in law enforcement who paid the ultimate sacrifice. One that hits right here at home was that of Rockdale County Sheriff's Deputy Investigator Brian Mahaffey just over four years ago.
Many measures are taken in effort to honor the memory of this fine young man, one of those being the Deputy Brian Mahaffey Memorial Award which is given to on Outstanding Public Safety Academy senior student. Six students were nominated by Rockdale County Public Schools staff members this year, and I am pleased to know two of those six are very active in our Explorers Program. Brandon Oglesby and William Treadwell are Corporals in our program and fine young men who give up their time on a regular basis.
Brandon Oglesby tied the winning votes to share this award with Lexus Young. Conyers Police Department is so fortunate to have such exemplary young persons in our Explorer Program. William Treadwell was also named Outstanding Criminal Investigation Student.
On a related note, the Rockdale Career Academy's Tactical Team competed in the Skills USA competition and came in second out of 16 teams. Members of this team are Explorers: Brandon Oglesby, Quantavis Garcia, Jaray Mitchell, and William Treadwell.
The Conyers Police Department recently conducted a Customer Service Satisfaction Survey for calendar year 2013. This survey was advertised on the front page of the City of Conyers website, the City of Conyers Police Department website, the City of Conyers Facebook page, and the Conyers Police Department Facebook page. A notice was also sent out through our Nixle notification system, the City of Conyers Twitter account, and the Conyers Police Department Twitter account.
The goals of the survey were:
- To measure levels of citizen concerns for safety
- To measure levels of police performance
- To measure public confidence in the department
- To provide an opportunity for public comment on police employee performance
During the survey period we received a total of 106 responses, fewer than we hoped for (there were 149 responses the previous year), but helpful nonetheless.
Overall, the results were favorable. All questions will be reviewed with staff and strategies implemented to improve satisfaction rates in applicable areas. Staff will also be recognized for the good work they did which resulted in favorable responses. Results of the survey have been made available to the staff and are currently posted on our website for public review.
