The Rockdale NAACP's 24th annual Freedom Fund Banqueton March 17 at the Georgia International Horse Park Carriage Room honored those working for education and the community and recognized NAACP volunteers and officers.

The guest speaker was Rockdale County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Samuel King, who also received the Jean Williams Award presented by Gary King.

State Sen. Ronald Ramsey was given a special Community Service Award by the Citizens Progressive Club, presented by Rev. Aldren Sadler, and the NAACP, presented by Karen James.

Long-time NAACP stalwart Lewis Belcher was moved to tears with an award recognizing his service.

Rockdale NAACP President Willie Gibson was honored for his service and steady guidance with a Leadership Award.

More than 300 turned out for the banquet, which raises funds for three scholarships given every year for students from each of the three main Rockdale high schools.
