Mercer University is looking at bringing its public safety Bachelor’s Degree program to Rockdale County, Rockdale Career Academy officials announced.

RCA CEO Miki Edwards said the program was part of the school’s efforts to offer multiple post-secondary pathways for high schools students interested in pursuing public safety careers.

Georgia Perimeter College offers a two-year associate’s in public safety and DeKalb Technical College has a Law Enforcement Academy that awards college credit as students receive their basic law enforcement training.

Mercer’s program would give students on that track as well as members of the public a chance to complete a four-year degree as the next step.

"The more education opportunities we bring here the more we strengthen the public and community," said Edwards.

Public Safety Instructor Ben McCumber said an informal survey found about 24 officers in local agencies interested in pursuing a four-year public safety degree.

The university will hold several information sessions, on Feb. 28 and March 1 for students at 1:15 p.m. and on March 1 at 6:30 p.m. for members of the public. The sessions will be held at RCA’s Auditorium, at 1064 Culpepper Drive, Conyers.
