Mary Zelma Smith McElhannon, affectionately known as Tootie by friends and family, lost her battle with breast cancer and died January 28, 2011 surrounded by her family.  Mary was born on December 24, 1951 in Louisville, Kentucky, the fourth child and only daughter of James Denton and Zelma Horton Smith.  She was a 1969 graduate of Southwest DeKalb High School and earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from DeKalb College in 1973.  On September 2, 1972, she married Stewart McElhannon III.  Tootie and Buddy were happily married for 38 years and were blessed with five children.  A full time homemaker, she took great pride in raising her five children. In recent years she served as a nurse at Refuge Pregnancy Center in Conyers.  She devoted her life to the cause of protecting the sanctity of human life and serving women and children.  Mary is survived by her husband, Buddy, and their five children and spouses:  Joel & Rosemary McElhannon, Russell & Erin McElhannon, Algernon & Taryn Tennyson, Margaret McElhannon and her fiance, Bryan Combs, and Andrew & Mari Westney.  She is also mourned by her many relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Highway 138 in Conyers.  Visitation will be held on Monday, January 31 from 5 to 8 pm at Scot Ward Funeral Services on Milstead Avenue in Conyers.  The McElhannon family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Refuge Pregnancy Center www.refugepregnancycenter.com in Conyers, Georgia.
