CONYERS - The Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council (CREDC) announced Atlanta Pallet Rack, a manufacturer and national distributor of warehouse storage systems and equipment, is making a multi-million dollar investment in their future and in Rockdale by purchasing the former Acuity building at 1335 Rockdale Industrial Boulevard.
The 500,000 square feet building, sitting on more than 40 acres of land, is one the largest buildings in Rockdale County.
"This acquisition speaks to the health of Atlanta's industrial market," said Chris Eckles with broker CBRE, which represented Atlanta Pallet Rack in the transaction.
"As a supplier to this sector, Atlanta Pallet Rack has now tripled their storage capacity in order to stay ahead of the rapid increase in demand."
He expressed appreciation to the City of Conyers, Rockdale County and the Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council for their help during this process.
CREDC Director Marty Jones, who represented Rockdale County and City of Conyers, said he was excited to see this purchase and noted the continued renaissance of this original manufacturing/industrial corridor in Conyers-Rockdale. This new investment will continue the re-birth of this area, bring jobs, people, and life to the area, he said.
"This building has a long history in this community. A lot of people have family members who have worked in there," said Jones. "This is a good sign, that it can be reconstituted and reused, leading the reinvestment in our oldest industrial corridor."
Originally built in the 1950s and with additions and upgrades over the years, the building at 1335 Rockdale Industrial Boulevard has a long and vibrant history. It started as a corporate office for Lithonia Lighting before the company was purchased by Acuity Brands.
Acuity moved out of the building over four years ago and originally planned to donate the building to the City of Conyers for reuse as a business incubator, academic space and new CREDC offices. But that plan fell through in 2011.
Atlanta Pallet Rack is currently located near Panola Road in DeKalb County.
Jones said this deal and discussion had been taking place with CREDC for the past three months or so.
Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council represents both Rockdale County and the City of Conyers. The mission of CREDC is to promote and enhance the economic vitality of the community through the retention and/or expansion of existing business and the resource appropriate attraction of new business.
