The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office used a neighborhood tip to thwart the plans of one resident who was mailing marijuana through the U.S. Postal Service.
Marquez Rashad Smith, 27, was arrested Thursday, Feb. 19, after the RCSO concluded a month-long joint investigation with U.S. Postal Inspection Service in which the department determined that Smith was using the mailing system to ship drugs.
"He was shipping them in small boxes, packages kind of thing," said RCSO Cpl. Michael Camp.
The Rockdale County resident was arrested at his home in the 1300 block of Classic Drive. During the arrest, the RCSO found five pounds of marijuana, which were individually wrapped in vacuum sealed one pound packages, and three firearms.
He was taken to the Rockdale County Jail for a felony possession of marijuana charge. He was released the next day on a $25,000 bond.
This is Smith's first arrest with the RCSO related to drugs. He had a traffic charge, but "that was several years ago," says Camp.
Smith's wife and children also live at the house, but weren't present during the time of arrest.
