The Newton High girls tennis team stepped out of region play Monday, taking on the Heritage Lady Patriots at home in a non-region contest.
Despite their recent improved play, the Lady Rams were unable to hold off the visiting Lady Patriots, falling 3-2 to Heritage in their final week of regular season action.
Newton captured two of the three singles matches, but was unable to pick up a win in doubles play, falling by a single match.
Heritage picked up its second win over a rival in a week after besting Salem last week on Senior Day.
In singles action, Newton's Bri Weaver opened the match for the Lady Rams with a win in No. 1 singles, defeating Heritage's Bianca Brown 8-6 in super set action.
The Lady Rams followed with their second win in singles play, as Irma Soriano rallied to take down Heritage's Fran Murray 8-6.
Soriano's single win was the last for the Lady Rams. Newton dropped its final singles match and both doubles matches, winning just seven combined games through the three contests.
Heritage picked up its lone singles win in No. 3 singles Using an 8-2 Logan Bouchillon victory over the Lady Rams Ashley Jean-Baptiste to clinch the match.
The Lady Patriots' No. 1 doubles duo of Julie Roseberry and Addy Allegretti defeated Newton's Ify Egbulem and Hannah Scott 8-2.
Heritage swept doubles play with an 8-3 victory in No. 2 doubles. Meliss Godwin and Becca Rackley defeated Newton's Ja'lynn Cole and Brooke Menchion, sealing the 3-2 victory.
Heritage returns to action Wednesday at home against Rockdale, while the Lady Rams face Salem to close out the week.
Heritage boys victorious
In boys action, the Patriots rolled to a 5-0 victory over the Rams, sweeping all five matches.
Jay Vinson, T.J. Wilson and Dylan Dedrick picked up wins in singles action for Heritage, while Ronnie Flow/Kevin Blum and Levi Lund/Darius Lewis earned doubles victories for the Patriots.
The win moved Heritage to 10-5 overall.
The Patriots return to action Thursday at Morgan County before the start of the region tournament.
