Historic B-17 flights coming to Atlanta
B-17MemphisBelle-1-1

The B-17 is one of the most iconic airplanes in U.S. military history, flying throughout every theater in World War II and continuing service until Vietnam, using the roar of its four engines, 13 .50-caliber machine guns, chin, top, ball and tail turrets and impressive bomb load to deliver 640,036 tons of explosives on European targets during the second world war.

This week it will deliver something a little more positive to the Atlanta area, bringing thrills to aviation buffs, historians and the young at heart with flyovers and chances to strap into the Flying Fortress and leave the ground.

The Memphis Belle, one of the most famous B-17's of World War II for bringing its crew back safely from every mission, and being the first bomber of its type to compete its tour of duty has been reconstructed after the popular movie of the same name comes to Peachtree DeKalb airport as part of the Liberty Foundation's historic flights.

The Memphis Belle will be available for public flights on March 2-3 at the DeKalb County airport for a cost of $450 and $400 for members of the Liberty Foundation.

The aircraft is one of just 13 B-17's still flying.
