Coming into tonight's matchup the Heritage girls had only two wins this season. Despite their record the Lady Patriots have been playing better as of late, pushing Newton to the brink in a three-point loss Saturday.'
Tonight, the Lady Patriots' improvement culminated into them getting their second region win of the season 38-35 after holding off a late charge from Salem.
The Lady Noles put up a great fight in the final two minutes, Salem was down 13 points with under two minutes to go and battled back to get within three. On the last possession of the game Shay Tarver dribbled toward the right sideline and with seconds ticking off the clock Miracle King made a great defensive play and grabbed the ball forcing a jump ball that went back to Salem with 1.8 seconds left.
The Lady ‘Noles inbounded the ball and the Lady Patriots defense made a great play not allowing Salem to get a shot off, taking the win 38-35.
Asia Caldwell finished with 15 points for Heritage, as she wreaked havoc at the guard position constantly fighting her way into the paint. Tarver dropped 17 points for Salem.
Heritage got a much needed victory against Salem, improving to 6-3 in region play and 13-7 overall.
The Patriots controlled much of the game, but like the girls, let Salem get close late, before pulling away. Heritage led Salem by 12 points, but let the ‘Noles creep back in the game, after a Michael Green three-pointer got Heritage's lead down to five.
Patriots' coach Vernon Denmark called a timeout and Heritage was able to inbound the ball safely, knock down free throws and play good defense to get the 66-57 victory.
Makyle Wilkerson led Heritage with 16 points, as his teammates were able to constantly find him in transition getting easy buckets in the paint. Despite the efforts of Michael Green, who scored a game-high 24 points, Salem suffered its fifth region loss of the season falling to 9-11 (4-5 Region 8-AAAAA).
