Two men arrested late Sunday for cultivating thousands of marijuana plants have been identified.

Alberto Majia, 34 and 22-year-old Felix Hilario Meregildo-Oxlaj are currently in the Newton County Detention Center. Although they have not yet made bond, there is a bond for each man.

Majia, who is from Mexico, is charged with possession/manufacture/distribution or marijuana. There is a $15,000 bond on his case.

Meregildo-Oxlaj is from Guatemala and is charged with possession/manufacture/distribution or marijuana, improper lane usage, driving without a license and felony possession of marijuana. He has a $15,500 bond.

The charges stem from a bust on Tuesday of a grow house made after a routine traffic stop yielded approximately four pounds of marijuana. Authorities went to the home off King Bostick Road where they could reportedly smell the odor of marijuana from outside. After obtaining a warrant, they found more than 1,000 plants in the home and in two additional buildings on the property.

According to Newton County Sheriff's Office 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, the plants were in all stages of growth and possibly being harvested around the clock. Investigators speculated that the marijuana was being distributed, not sold, since it was still on the plant and not compressed and packaged for sale.
