Glass manufacturer moves into Conyers from Madison

An industrial glass manufacturer is moving from Morgan County to Conyers, according to Marty Jones, executive director of the Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council.

Anthony International will take over 709 Sigman Road by sometime next month. That's the former home of Hillphoenix, the major local employer that makes grocery store refrigeration and freezer units. Anthony sells glass doors to Hillphoenix for its units, and they have the same parent company, Dover Corporation. Hillphoenix is now headquartered nearby on Gees Mill Road.

"It makes more sense to ship some doors across the street than 30 miles away," Jones said.

Anthony employs about 150 workers. Jones said there may be some local job openings due to current Anthony workers resigning to avoid a lengthy commute. It is also possible that some Anthony workers will move to the Conyers area.

Jones said he will meet this month with Anthony managers and employees to talk about Conyers and answer any questions about the community.

Hillphoenix is moving operations from the building on Sigman Road in Conyers as well as a Newton facility to a new $30 million, 500,000 square foot center on Gees Mill Road.

The new Gees Mill Road facility consolidates three of Hillphoenix's facilities in Rockdale and one in Newton under the same roof and will be the workplace of about 900 employees. The building, financed by Ashley Capital in a $30 million 15-year build-to-suit lease, also allows for future growth of the facility.
