General Mills layoffs to affect local plant

The announcement of layoffs by General Mills will impact the Covington plant, though it is unclear how much.

According to General Mills' spokeswoman Bridget Christenson, who said the company does not go into details about the impact by location, "there are a handful of individuals who have been impacted" at the Covington facility.

Last month, General Mills issued a press release stating plans of a $109 million pre-tax restructuring.

A part of the restructuring, it was announced, was the expectation to eliminate approximately 850 positions globally.

"Plans also include asset-related costs of approximately $13 million pre-tax associated with the write-down of selected production equipment," the release said. "The company will record total restructuring charges of approximately $109 million pre-tax, reflecting one-time employee separation expenses and the asset-related costs."

The Covington General Mills facility, located on Industrial Boulevard in Newton County has been providing local jobs for more than 20 years.
