IN BRIEF: First responders were sent scrambling Tuesday afternoon after a severe thunderstorm swept through the area. Fire broke out after lightning struck near a single family home at 1976 Lou Dr off of Flat Shoals Road, which destroyed a spare room and kitchen. The residents were not home at the time. Area residents initially thought the fire was a woods fire behind the Harvest Grove neighborhood. Firefighters also responded to a call from 601 Clubland Circle in the Honey Creek area. Residents reportedly detected smoke after a lightning strike but no fire was found when firefighters came out to the home. Two minor motor vehicle crashes were reported. Conyers police also responded to a multi-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Irwin Bridge Road and Sigman Road. A Rockdale County 911 tower was struck by lightning, causing the dispatch calls to be rerouted through the Conyers 911 center. However, the Rockdale 911 center continued to operate and service was not interrupted, said Rockdale County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Sharon Webb. Conyers city government office phone lines were also down Tuesday after lightning struck.
