Covington man killed by train

A Covington man was killed Sunday night when his semi-truck and a train collided in Morgan County.

Richard “Rick” Furry, 49, was driving his semi-truck (with no trailer attached) on Double Bridges Road, when he crossed the railroad tracks; he went off the roadway and into a ditch, where he was struck by a CSX train that was hauling coal.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, it is unclear at this time if Furry had been attempting to beat the train, or if there are drugs or alcohol involved. It is still “very much under investigation,” GSP said.
