A Conyers man died Friday night after being struck in the head with a stick during a fight. Police have arrested the other man in the fight, though he is currently not charged with the victim's death.
Melvin Alfonso Briggs, 21, was charged with aggravated assault and affray.
The vicitm, Leon Lefleur, 20, was found on the trails in the wooded area behind the Forest Villa subdivision off of Irwin Bridge Road around 7 p.m. and had "obvious injuries" according to a Conyers Police Department statement. Lefleur was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Lefleur had reportedly gotten into a fight shortly before, around 6:40 p.m., with Melvin Alfonso Briggs, 21, who lives in the Forest Villa subdivision.
"During the fight, Briggs apparently struck Lafleur in the head with a wooden stick. The stick used in this case was recovered nearby and secured as evidence," wrote CDP spokesperson Capt. Scott Freeman. According to the CPD, no guns or knives were known to be used in the fight.
Briggs was still in the area and turned himself in to detectives without incident. He is currently being held at the Rockdale County jail.
"We are waiting to wrap up several pieces of the investigation before determining if additional charges are applicable and what those additional charges may be," wrote Freeman.
Briggs has not been charged with murder, Freeman pointed out.
"The investigation is ongoing to determine to the series of events that led up to the fight and as to the exact cause of death of Lafleur. An autopsy will be performed, which will provide additional information as to the exact cause of death," wrote Freeman.
The cause of the fight is currently unknown.
