Conyers calls for alcohol sales ballot question

IN BRIEF: Conyers city council unanimously approved calling for a special election on March 6 on the question of allowing Sunday package alcohol sales.

The measure had been briefly tabled while the local elections board members faced dismissal by Rockdale County Superior Court.

City attorney Mike Waldrop told city council members it seemed very likely the replacement members newly appointed by the Rockdale Republican and Democratic parties would be sworn in early enough to call for the March 6 special election.

Councilman Cleveland Stroud also pointed out there needed to be voter education because voters living in the city limits would likely see two alcohol sales questions on the ballot - one for the city and one for the county. City residents would have to vote on both questions.

The county Board of Commissioners also approved requesting the referrendum on March 6.
