Car drives into Covington home

UPDATED: A woman watching 9/11 commemorations Wednesday morning was shocked when a car came through her living room, following an argument at a neighbor’s home.

Around 8 a.m., 26-year-old Lerenzo L. Gaston went to the home of his child’s mother to pick up the 5-year-old. After putting the child in the front passenger seat, Gaston and the child’s mother got into an argument, according to Newton County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison.

During the argument, the woman reportedly reached into the car window and unlocked the door. When Gaston tried to relock the door, his foot slipped and inadvertently pushed the gas pedal instead of the brake, which reversed his car into the front of the neighbor’s home.

According to homeowner Tina Hart, who has lived in the house on Bentley Place Way with her husband, Dennis, for 23 years, she heard a big “boom” and a car came through the wall, knocking the AC unit, which almost struck her, across the room.

The mother of Gaston’s child, who was holding onto his car a little when he stepped on the gas, had several visible superficial injuries, according to Morrison.

The 5-year-old was not injured.

Gaston was arrested and charged with reckless conduct, no safety restraints for children and cruelty to children in the second degree.

He remains in the Newton County Jail.
