Bulldogs place send at region tourney

he Alcovy High School golf program scored a pair of region titles this week, as the Tigers’ girls and boys golf teams captured Region 2-AAAAAA tournament titles, advancing on to the Class AAAAAA sectional tournament.

The Lady Tigers posted a team-low 335, while the boys team just missed the state-qualifying stroke mark with a team-total 336.

Alcovy’s Zach Floyd led the boys tournament, shooting a tournament-low 73, while Luella’s Nicole Court captured low medalist honors for the girls.

In the girls event, Alcovy rival Newton finished 23 strokes back of the Lady Tigers, placing third overall with a team score of 358. Luella finished seven strokes ahead of the Lady Rams with a 351.

Individually, Alcovy’s Kelsey Knight finished three strokes back of the Lady Lions’ Court, recording a round of 107.

Kaitlyn Doering (113) and Emily Moore (115) joined Knight in the Lady Tigers’ region-winning scoring round, while Jenna Healy posted a 122 while representing Alcovy.

Helping Newton to a third place finish was Ashton McKinnon (118), Paris Little (119) and Ashley Weesner (121). The Lady Rams’ Kelita Cox also posted an individual round of 140.

The Lady Tigers return to Heron Bay on Monday, May 5, for the girls Class AAAAAA sectionals.

Tigers lead field

Floyd was joined in the Tigers’ low-scoring round by Wesley Keaton, who recorded an 85 during his individual round. Hunter Clark (88) and Andrew Cochran (90) closed out Alcovy’s scoring, while Schyler Parris (98) and Matt Lovell (106) also represented the Tigers at the event.

Region rival Rockdale finished second at the region tournament, finishing 31 shots back of the 330-stroke sectional mark. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Brandon Lee with an 85, while Cameron Rivers (88), Ahmad Williams (94) and Malik Moville (94) added to Rockdale’s team total of 361. Matthew McLean (96) and Carlan Ivey (98) also posted rounds for the Bulldogs.

The Newton Rams wrapped up their golf season with a fifth place finish, shooting a team total 460. The Rams’ Riley Dameron (110), Brady Shivers (114), Tyler Bystrong (115) and Mules Shivers (121) posted scoring round for Newton.

The Luella Lions placed third overall in the boys regional event, finishing five strokes back of Rockdale with a 366.

 

The Tigers will return to action May 5 at the Class AAAAAA sectional at Canongate at Georgia National in McDonough.
