Tax digest dip less than feared (Aug. 13, 2012)
IN BRIEF: The Board of Commissioners will vote on the millage rate on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 6 p.m., at the JP Carr Community Center, 981 Taylor Street, Conyers. According to the advertised rate, the millage rate will be the same as last year, 16.91 or lower. That means a revenue collection of about $1.8 million less than last year. However, the county budgeted based on an estimated 5 percent drop in the net digest, and the digest dropped about 4.5 percent.
Millage rates are normally due by Aug. 1, but Rockdale County filed for an extension. The millage rates are due to the state by Sept. 14, according to County Clerk Jennifer Rutledge. The rates must be advertised for two weeks before a vote. The county is the body that officially levies the taxes for the school system and city of Conyers and must wait until the city council and school board has officially set their millage rates.
For the city portion of the property tax, the city of Conyers will recommend keeping last year's rate of 9.9 mills. The city council will vote on Aug. 23, 10 a.m. at 1194 Scott Street, second floor in the city council chambers.
For the education portion of the property tax, Rockdale County Public Schools will recommend keeping last year's rate of 24.5 mills. The Rockdale County Board of Education will vote on the millage rate in a specially called meeting on Aug. 23, 5:30 p.m., at the Rockdale County Public Schools administrative building at 954 North Main Street.
