ARC Director to speak at MLK Breakfast

The Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and the Rockdale branch of the NAACP will celebrates the 10th annual breakfast to commemorate the life and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan.20 with a special guest speaker.

This year's breakfast, donated by Longhorn Steakhouse at 1294 Iris Drive, Conyers, will be highlighted by a keynote address from Douglas R. Hooker, executive director of the Atlanta Regional Commission.

As head of the official planning organization for the 10-county, 70-city Atlanta region, he oversees regional planning programs in the areas of transportation, community development, land use, water and natural resources, aging services and workforce development and more. Hooker is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta, Leadership Georgia, the Regional Leadership Institute, and the Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership, and is a co-founder. He is a board member and former chairman of the Civic League for Regional Atlanta. He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a master's in technology and science policy from Georgia Tech, as well as an MBA from Emory University's Goizueta Business School.

The MLK breakfast also will feature singing, fellowship, and a few words from community pastors and leaders. Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. The cost per person is $10. Proceeds will benefit the United Way of Metro Atlanta and its programs to alleviate homelessness and improve school readiness.
