The local Chi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and its Emerging Young Leaders, or EYL, youth mentoring group joined other metro-Atlanta area EYL groups at a youth summit Jan. 18 at the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy in Atlanta.

The local EYL group is a group of middle school girls who attend school in Newton and Rockdale counties. The summit focused on skills and strategies targeted for male and female middle schoolers.

This year’s theme was “Turn Up the Dream,” in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Summit participants rotated between student and parent workshops and participated in a roundtable discussion. Workshop topics included character building, health and wellness, educational enrichment, leadership development, civic engagement, presentational skills, teens and drugs, recycling, college life, awareness of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, and the teachings of MLK, Jr. The workshops were led by AKA members and community leaders.
